In this lesson, students will use the concepts of area and perimeter to survive and prosper as miners during the California Gold Rush.
Beginning in the Midwest, students will take a trip to the California coast. Upon arrival, they will claim a plot of land and use natural resources to build a fence that will protect their land. Once their land is protected, students will work together to identify the section of land that each group member should mine in order to maximize their efficiency and survive the coming winter.
