This is a small group reader's theater is for 5 - 9 students. I usually have students double up the roles so that their parts are bigger. The script is about gossip. The Gossip Ghoul lives to make trouble. He/She goes around looking to make trouble. Each time someone talks behind someone else’s back the Gossip Ghoul wins. It isn’t until people actually start to ask each other what the truth is that the Gossip Ghoul is able to be defeated. This script is used to talk about the damage that gossip can do. If there is time afterwards we also play telephone to help students understand how gossip works.
I use reader's theaters to encourage my students to practice fluency. It is a fun way to do something that they need. Most of my scripts are in black and white so they photo copy easily. The problem with many other reader's theaters is that students spend a lot of time waiting for their part. When you have a small group they get more practice in and less off task behaviors take place.
My name is Melanie Whitesides but my store name is Wonbyone and I hope that your students enjoy this script as much as mine did. This script is one of the pack that I use at the beginning of the year to introduce important subjects and expectations for my classroom. Let me know how things go!
I haven't put it down for 3rd grade because it would need to be a higher group but the subject is as important in any grade and, with help, 3rd graders could perform it.
