This nonfiction unit about groundhogs will brighten up any classroom. The Common Core aligned K -2nd unit is loaded with activities. Science includes an anchor chart to introduce the unit, labeling the parts of a groundhog, a nonfiction reader, an explanation of what causes a shadow, and an outdoor science experiment correlating the angle of the sun with the casting of a shadow. Literacy activities include mind mapping, differentiating fact from opinion and writing about the differences, an opposites flip book "craftivity", vocabulary development (dictionary skills for the older students), a "readtivity" book, sequencing, syllabication, using adjectives and verbs in writing exercises, and using descriptive language when writing. Math activities include word problems measurement, graphing, decomposing numbers, counting and writing numbers, using tally marks, dividing equally, and a memory game.
