This Word document is a summary of the plot of the John Steinbeck novel in "Fill in the Blanks" format. There are twenty-five pages for students to complete.
Students demonstrate their understanding of the plot by completing the cloze test. Instead of giving students a summary of the plot as notes, I think that students learn better when they actively construct their own. However, for some students this can be a daunting task especially with a theme-heavy novel like this. I use this technique as a support to students to assist them write their own summary.
This is the type of activity that can be used again for revision. It's a great way to sum up without actually doing all of the work for them. And, they enjoy doing this activity!!
There is a word bank at the bottom of each chapter to help students. As this is a Word document, you could remove this to make the activity more challenging.
The solution is also included (13 pages in a smaller font).
