High order writing tasks (78) based on the novel by John Steinbeck. These activities test students' knowledge of the novel, their ability to see events from more than one viewpoint and their ability to write in different styles/formats.
Some tasks require students to imagine that they are characters in the novel, and then to write in the voice of that character using an appropriate register and tone. Other activities place students in situations similar to some events described in the novel and they are asked to write their personal response. Some writing activities are based on the complete text (review, interview questions, epilogue/prediction exercises), but most are based on incidents in the novel.
They are WRITING exercises, so they are also designed to improve student's abilities in different styles of writing. Styles include:
- Diary Entries
- Letters (Formal and Informal)
- Postcards / Envelopes
- Emails / Text (SMS)
- Dialogues (some to be acted out)
- Reports (including internet research)
- Presentation / Slideshow
- Interview Questions
- Essays / Compositions
- Report (Newspaper / Radio / Television / Police)
- Media (Poster)
All assignments include hints, sub-headings or structure guides to provide a starting point or scaffolding to help students get started.
There are 78 activities in total. These writing tasks give students an opportunity to show a deep understanding of the novel, as well as to practice writing, media, research, and presentation skills. Many of the activities could be used for summative assessment.
It's a Word document. There are activities for each part of the book. The document is organised in this manner. The preview file shows some of the assignments for Chapter 1 - 5.
Even completion of a sub-section of these activities will ensure that students have an in-depth knowledge of The Grapes of Wrath.
