A complete unit plan for The Grapes of Wrath focused primarily on outside resources. The purpose of this unit is to provide context on a variety of topics for Steinbeck's work. Topics include: The Dust Bowl, John Steinbeck as reporter and author, the Migrant Experience (both historically and in the present-day), Music as Poetry, and Unionization.
The file includes:
A Full Lesson Plan document (pdf format) that includes day-to-day pacing. It includes Common Core Standards addressed, suggested assessment, pacing of chapter assignments to correspond with the novel.
A presentation (pdf format) that includes curated links (images, nonfiction essays, articles, documentaries - in full length on YouTube) for each topic. [This section represents over 40 hours of work in curating links!] Each link also comes with suggested discussion questions that double as journal entry questions.
A document (pdf format) of four short writing assignments. These include: compare and contrast essays (2), a poetry analysis assignment, and a creative writing assignment.
Original documents referenced in the writing assignment directions. These include: outlines for compare and contrast essays, an outline for writing a poetry analysis, and a brief overview on writing the introduction to a literary essay.
PLEASE NOTE: This lesson plan refers to discussion of chapters in The Grapes of Wrath without providing specific comprehension questions. I utilized a Prestwick House guide for questions relating directly to comprehension of the novel. This guide is meant to supplement and enhance teaching with primary source documents and historical background.
