This is my mini-unit on the Graphic Novel. I use Scott McCloud's book Understanding Comics to help students read graphic novels in class. It is necessary to read McCloud's book to really understand the slides I've put together. The unit consists of:
6 PowerPoint Presentations with visuals
4 Handouts for note taking with visuals
2 Handouts for assessment
I generally take the students to the library so they can pick out their own graphic novels to read and use in class. However, you could use a class graphic novel as well and weave your own lessons in between my lessons. For example, I have used these PowerPoint lessons and alternated lessons on the graphic novels Fahrenheit 451 or Maus, but it's up to you. The final assessment is to create a comic with a partner using the knowledge they have gained from my unit on comics. Most students really enjoy this and you can stretch out the project or condense the project as you see fit.
