The Great Depression Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- this is a 14 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teacher’s key for easy marking. It contains 37 questions based on a Crash Course U.S. history video and the history.com website.
Students will begin this assignment by watching the Crash Course U.S. history video:The Great Depression. The video will introduce the time period and go over the key themes and events of the time. The collapse of the stock market in 1929 is introduced and it is explained that this was not the sole reason behind the Great Depression. The crisis which farmers had faced throughout the 1920's, as well as the massive amount of debt people were carrying due to the new consumer culture are reviewed and used to explain the many causes of the Great Depression. The collapse of the banking system and the freezing of credit are then argued as the main causes of the Great Depression. President Hoover and his ineffectual policies are reviewed, as well as the deflation that swept across America and the rest of the world. The freezing of world trade, the skyrocketing rate of unemployment, and the election of FDR are also discussed. Following the video, students will travel to the history.com website and watch a second video and read an article. The video and article will provide more background behind the causes of the Great Depression and will go into greater depth about the administration of FDR. The New Deal, the rise of extremist governments in Europe, and the eventual end of the Great Depression (World War 2) are all covered in the second video and the article.
This webquest can be easily used as an introduction to the topic, a study guide, or a quick and easy sub plan.
