The Energy Scavenger Hunt is a perfect alternative to the traditional “test” at the end of the energy unit. For this activity, students scour through magazines to search for pictures that fit the categories listed on the treasure map. The pictures are cut from a magazine and glued to a base paper, and then points are awarded for each picture on a scale of 1-5.
This is an excellent cooperative learning activity and works best with small groups of two to four students. The format of the activity provides for maximum flexibility in grading, allowing the teacher to assign student grades based on a predetermined total score. Although the scavenger hunt was designed to be used with magazines, it can also be adapted for use with a digital camera or personal electronic device as students search throughout the school grounds.
