Teachers can use this organizer during a close read completed twice, once while listening to reading, the second when students engage in the text independently. The questions are scaffolded to match the concepts of the higher level thinking questions used as an in class or homework assignment.
During the first close read while students listen to reading, the expecation is for them to write only page, paragraph, or line numbers from the Great Fire exemplar text when they hear the same language used on the organizer in the read aloud portion.
The second time they interact with the text, students will read independently and make notes and text based evidence examples to answer the questions on the graphic organizer.
Students then use the organizer to complete the corresponding homework questions.
This lesson was created with the concept of backward planning and scaffolding to set students up for success when answering higher level thinking questions.
