Assignments to accompany the novel The Great Gatsby. One assignment asks students to look at how the characters have developed over the course of the novel. Another assignment asks students to analyze the symbols in the novel. There is also a light bulb that is intended to be copied on green paper. Following a discussion of what the green light symbolizes for Gatsby, students write their own hopes and dreams on their green light and I hang them on the wall. Finally, there is a final assignment where students find a picture, symbol or illustration to reflect a theme from the book. Then they write a single paragraph discussing how the theme plays out in the novel. An example of a complete assignment is included.
