These discussion questions are designed to help students "dig into" The Great Gatsby. The questions call for close reading of particular passages, interpretation of themes and symbols, and reader response. I have found that letting students talk first in small groups really gives them the confidence to share their ideas in front of the whole class. These discussion questions, then, might be used as a springboard for a larger, more open-ended discussion. Chapter 2, in particular, really gets students talking.
