29 word crossword designed to ensure that students are familiar with the more difficult words from the second chapter of the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Words are.. anaemic, ashen, barge, bleak, coarse, deft, desolate, dignity, dismal, divorce, drunk, foul, gypped, hauteur, janitor, kike, languid, leaden, mistress, oculist, portfolio, retina, shrill, stout, strident, sumptuous, supercilious, transcendent and vitality.
Many of these words are important because they're adjectives used to describe characters and places. Others are words that students may find difficult.
Although students often see the puzzle format as a fun task, it is an active learning activity. It helps students with spelling and comprehension of new words.
I use this activity as a fun homework or classwork assignment when we have read Chapter 2. It's also the type of activity that makes a useful filler if you are teaching as a substitute or on days when you have nothing else prepared.
A word bank is supplied to support students.
The solution is printed on the second page. Download the preview file to see the solution and the grid.
