My Junior English classes do a lot of their own thinking and breaking down of the text which is how I came up with this discussion strategy. I wanted them to discuss the book as a whole group, but I found that they were not confident enough to discuss the questions for more than one minute. That is why I decided to have them answer and discuss in smaller groups then have the student-led discussion.
After reading each chapter, I put students into groups of 3-4 and give them 30 minutes to answer, discuss, and write down answers to each of the eight questions citing evidence from the book and making two questions of their own. When they are finished, we move the desks into a big circle that includes everyone in the classroom. I either choose or have a student volunteer to be leader. The leader will read the questions one by one and everyone will discuss the question fully. I then have them ask their questions, and we discuss it as a class.
