Puzzle (with solution) based on Chapter 9 of The Great Gatsby.
Although students see this as a fun activity, it is an active learning task. It helps students with the difficult vocabulary, in terms of both spelling and meaning.
There are 30 words/clues in the puzzle. Words used are adventitious, bulbous, catastrophe, circular, circumstantial, complacent, coroner, defiance, deranged, eager, elocution, grotesque, hearse, inquest, nightmare, poise, postpone, racy, resolve, revolver, scornful, sneer, solidarity, superfluous, surmise, testimony, transitory, untrue, urge, and wire.
A word bank is supplied to support students. You could make the puzzle a lot more challenging by redacting this.
This is the type of activity that makes a useful filler. I use it to keep stronger students occupied while others are finishing other tasks. You could also use it for homework, as a pre-reading vocabulary exercise, or when acting as a substitute teacher.
