Cars are an important symbol/motif in The Great Gatsby. This lesson focuses on characterization of the novel's major players after reading chapter one. I put students in groups of 3-4 and then give them half a dozen Matchbox cars. They then work together to decide which car best "matches" each character's personality/description. They write a character sketch for each character, choose a textual example as support, and then explain the character's connection to the car. All of this is completed on the worksheet. A teacher model for Jordan Baker is included.
