These questions guide students through a close analysis of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby. Students work through the text, focusing on analysis and comparison / contrast of characters, building symbolism and themes, analyzing word choice and details, analyzing the effects of structure, using textual evidence, and making inferences about the text. Students also read an informative passage about uncut pages and analyze a painting by El Greco in order to better understand scenes in the novel. Finally, students are asked to make an argument as to whether Gatsby is "great." All questions build upon one another to build a deep understanding of the novel's characters and themes. The questions can be used for individual analysis or small- or whole-group discussion of the text. They can also be left for substitutes!
