I love to use music when teaching this novel. For this lesson I have students make connections between an Adele song and The Great Gatsby. I then transition to discussion questions specific to chapter nine and the novel as a whole. Here's a typical question: Literary critic James Miller writes, “Although The Great Gatsby is much more than a book about the 1920s, it remains solidly based in the era and place that gave it birth. But it is not only based there: it also provides, in some sense, a commentary on our times.” What commentary does this book make about our times?
