Goodreads is a great way to help students find books they’ll enjoy reading. It’s easy and fun to set up an account, and this activity not only asks students to engage one of the characters from The Great Gatsby on a deeper level by considering what the character might enjoy reading, it also teaches them how to use the Goodreads platform for themselves.
The first handout provided here asks students to choose a character (Daisy, Jordan, Nick, Tom or Gatsby) and consider the character’s interests, values, and eventually, possible reading choices.
The second handout is ideally completed as part of an in-class workshop in the computer lab, though it could also be homework if you know your students can access the internet outside of class. Choosing to work together in the lab, however, will allow you to guide students through any difficulties they might encounter as they set up Goodreads accounts for their characters. I recommend you take a few minutes the night before your computer lab day to set up a Goodreads account of your own, so you understand the process.
This packet is very lightly adapted from my general product, Create a Goodreads Account for a Literary Character. Please don't buy both! I have adapted it here in an effort to cater to teachers who prefer novel-specific activities rather than more generally formatted ones.
