INQUIRY-BASED ACTIVITY INCLUDING WORKSHEETS
APPLICABLE TO AP LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION
5 STATIONS FEATURING MUSIC, FILM AND HISTORIC EVENTS
F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is a classic tale recounting the Roaring 20s. The novel is a fictional account of a love story between Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, told from the narrative perspective of a partially-removed character, Nick Carraway. Fitzgerald novel captures the materialism, excess, idealism and economic crisis of 1920’s America.
This interactive Gallery Walk activity is an inquiry-based approach to exploring the decade of the 1920s and introducing students to Fitzgerald's novel. The gallery features music, film, archived newspaper articles, photographs and various book covers to prompt students to make inferences about the context of The Great Gatsby, as well as predictions about the story.
Included with these primary sources is a worksheet to guide students to the learning goal. This worksheet features questions for each station of the gallery. While many of these questions prompt predictions to the novel and do not require an answer key, a key has been provided for the photographs to support your consolidation of this activity. Keywords have also been bolded for various learning styles.
Also included in this resource are hyperlinks to archived newspaper articles, musical numbers, and film clips. This activity requires two media stations with internet access; the remaining materials for the other three stations can be printed. If media stations are not available, the gallery can be adapted to a classroom lesson.
