This assignment requires students to construct a quote journal, consisting of quotes that feature literary devices. While reading Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, students collect eight quotations and construct a response that:
- Identifies the literary device(s) and/or element(s) at work
- Restates the passage being addressed
- Identifies the context
- Analyzes the effect of the device and its significance
The product includes a list of possible devices/elements to search for, a student model, and a rubric. The assignment, designed to save teachers time during the grading stage, explains that one entry will be randomly selected and assessed for quality of ideas and writing quality (20 points), while the other eight entries will be assessed for completion (80 points).
