Product Description
For this assessment, students write a letter to a character to address whether he/she was truly happy or not; (what advice can you give them about happiness and how to achieve it?) They will address behaviors/actions the character takes and research informational texts on the idea of happiness. Finally, they will incorporate textual evidence from the novel as well as the pieces of informational text about happiness.

This is a great way for students to not only engage with the novel, but also examine their own happiness. As they are analyzing the characters and examining why they are unhappy, they will gain knowledge about how they themselves can live a happier life.

In m class, we read informational texts throughout the novel about happiness, and then use those same informational texts to support their advice to their character. However, this can also be a great opportunity for students to do some research themselves on the ideas of happiness.

In addition the the assignment sheet, there is also a character map with character relationships and handout with rules about quoting texts in an MLA essay.
