This activity is an awesome way to have students practice for the MSL's (Measures of Student Learning) or Common Exam. The assignment features an excerpt from chapter two of The Great Gatsby.
Students will answer ten multiple-choice questions that vary between complexity; some of the questions are basic reading comprehension questions while others require students to look at the context or draw inferences.
For the constructed response portion, students must describe the purpose of the excerpt, and support their claim with at least two pieces of textual evidence. A rubric is included. The rubric shows students how they'll be graded while also providing the teacher with grading instructions.
