This assignment takes a two-page passage from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald which can be used to lead students through a complete analysis of the passage examining diction, detail, syntax, imagery and figurative language. A handout for students is included that defines terms they need for their analysis. Once the analysis piece is complete, there is a guided expository writing assignment making use of the information they garner from their close reading of the text.
A complete analysis of the text is included for the teacher to use in assisting students to analyze this particular passage. Literary devices that students are being asked to locate (syntax, detail, diction, figurative language, and imagery) are notated on this Teacher’s Passage Analysis. Included are notes that explain the allusions used in this part of the text for the teacher’s information so it can be shared with students.
