PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

In this writing assignment, students are required to write a letter to the school board persuading them not to ban The Great Gatsby.

The ultimate goal is for students to read both fiction and non-fiction to inspire a letter that utilizes both pathos and logos to persuade a real-world audience.

Note: The reason I created this lesson was to encourage students to find a purpose for reading the novel. Rather than place the burden on me, I asked them to persuade their audience to value and appreciate the text. The results were wonderful: Students fought for the book and used academic argument simultaneously.
