Looking for a fun review activity that will challenge students and help them review for your Great Gatsby unit exam? This two-page quotation race features 34 short lines from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel. Main characters, such as Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway, along with minor, but important characters such as Klipspringer and Catherine (Myrtle Wilson’s sister) are included on the worksheet. The answer key is here, too, of course.
Students can work solo on the handout, but it’s more fun to have them compete in teams of two. Using their copies of the novel, their study notes, and their brains, students will complete the two-page worksheet matching characters to their lines from the story. The race alone usually takes 20 minutes of class time. You can turn this into a 45-minute activity by not only giving the Quote Race in class, but also going over the answers and discussing the related scenes once all of the teams have submitted their papers. Students love the scavenger hunt aspect of this game. The team with the highest number of correct answers wins. In the case of a tie, the victor will be the team that submitted its sheet first, so there is a race element to the game.
