As an assessment for their reading of "The Great Gatsby," students will watch a film outside of class and write a comparative essay of the film and novel for their themes. The handout gives all the student directions and examples of films and themes to use. The teacher's guide gives examples on how to teach the essay, including alternatives based on course content. This assignment was originally done with AP seniors, but could be adapted to various high school settings. This assignment will take about 2 weeks for students to complete; the teacher could devote as little as 30 minutes to of class time, or incorporate the essay into class daily.
