I created this unit for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby for my Honors American Literature classes. The unit includes a calendar, quizzes and keys, and a unit test with 40 multiple choice questions and a 60 point impromptu essay, with several prompts for students to choose from. The unit features an exercise called “Find the Lines,” which asks students to go back over their reading and look for specific ideas, symbols, character revelations, and allusions that they might not have noticed in their first reading of a particular chapter. The unit also has a study guide with reading comprehension and discussion questions, as well as poems that might profitably be connected to the novel, and four impromptu prompts. In order to focus on textual analysis, I ask students to practice a strict essay structure so I include in the unit a handout on essay structure and expectations and an essay template to clarify the structure. Also, I ask students to find and analyze literary criticisms, so I include a sample of the analysis handout I use with assigned literary criticism. To encourage focused formal discussion, I have an assignment I designate “Discussion Tasks,” which asks students to generate questions and comments that delve into the characters, themes, and literary techniques of the work, encouraging academic discussion.
