Whether the children are reading "The Great Kapok Tree" for Earth Day, Arbor Day, or simply as part of a thematic unit, the message of rainforest conservation imparted through this story speaks just as clearly, loudly, and urgently as it did when "The Great Kapok Tree" was first written in 1990 - perhaps even more so.
Included in this packet are:
A 22 question multiple choice assessment (which also includes a choice of two brief written responses.)
A 12 page "Great Kapok Tree Logbook" in which students can draw the various rainforest animals, as well as summarize their messages, in the order they appeared in the story. Over the years, I've found that many children tend to get the animals "confused," and this logbook is useful in helping them "keep track" of the various animals as it were.
An "Amazon Rainforest" word search featuring various animals from the story.
A seven page "play" or "script" that enables the children to easily act out the story in Reader's Theater using puppets, beanie babies, plush animals, or animal masks. The original story is reproduced in the script word-for-word. For the complete "cast of characters," please see the thumbnail image which I have included.
I have also included an answer key for the test, as well as one for the word search.
All of the handouts and worksheets are rendered in black and white. Thus you should be able to neatly print them out on your school's printer, using your school's ink, on your school's paper (thereby saving a few extra cents.) In addition, your copies will be stark, crisp, and clear (as opposed to the many muddled grays that tend to be with copying a color image.)
I thank you for taking the time to preview this product and hope it will prove beneficial to you and your children as it has done with mine.

Postscript: If you purchase this product and like it, please take a brief moment to leave a word or two of feedback. I'd really, really appreciate it!
