This lesson lasts the entire year and should be done near the beginning. This lesson/activity ties in with:
United States geography/history
The basic idea of this lesson is that students will write a letter to a school in every single state in the United States. Students will send information about their school and state and ask for information on the other school's state as well. In the parent letter, students will have a homework assignment to research a school in another state (the web link is on the parent letter). This weblink will give a list of every school in the country sorted by state, name, and even by population. It is very interesting to see that some schools have 1,000 students and some have only 20. This promotes great discussion about why things are like this and has kids examine things such as area, way of life, and culture. Last year, I recieved 32 letters back throughout the year which provided 32 seperate teaching moments when students got to learn about 32 other states and other schools! I had a US map posted on my wall and we posted one of the tiny envelopes on each state we had a reply from. In this way, your students are also making penpals with other students! This is such a great project and the kids absolutely love it!
