The Great Math Debate is a strategy used to build critical thinking skills, encourage collaboration among students, and foster discussion in your classroom. It can be used with any group of students in any classroom, with virtually any content.
How does it work?
First, the students are presented with a problem to solve. They must work independently to complete the problem the best way they know how first.
Then, students work together in groups to discuss their answers with each other. They have to defend and justify their answers to each other, working through any disagreement.
Finally, student groups craft what they consider to be the “BEST” answer and present it to the class. The Great Math Debate ensues!
