This package includes two parts and the lessons may be broken up over a couple days.
Part 1: The Great Muffin Makeover-No More Muffin Tops
As part of a food lab we select two healthy muffin recipes to make. For the purpose of this activity I used the LooneySpoons series cookbook. You can use this lesson and adapt it to any recipe. The lesson has the students analyze their recipes and determine things such as calories, fat content and ways to make the recipes healthier.
Part 2: The Great Muffin Debate-Students research online to compare Tim Horton's, Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. They look at the fat content and calories in donuts and muffins and determine what is the healthier choice. There are many reflection questions included as well to spark critical thinking. You can also do this activity in a debate format once the students have completed their research.
