Students will love solving math problems to get their penguins to safety! Just add dice, and you will have everything you need for a fun place value game about finding 10 more and 10 less (or 1 more and 1 less if you use this differentiation option). My students play this game during our “Tacky the Penguin” unit, but it makes a great addition to any penguin- or winter- themed unit!
This resource includes a game board, directions sheet, “I Can” statements to display at centers, 6 unique player pieces, 108 playing cards, and two number grids (from 0-100 and 100-200). The playing cards are divided into 3 sets to provide for differentiation options:
36 Easy- finding 1 more and 1 less from 0-100
36 Medium- finding 10 more and 10 less from 0-100
36 Challenging- finding 10 more and 10 less from 100-200
Students of varying ability levels can play as partners- just copy the card sets on different colors or label them with colored stickers, and make sure students select cards from their appropriate piles as they play together!
I suggest turning this into a file- folder game for easy storage. Just attach the directions page to the outside of the folder, and glue the game board to the inside. Store the player pieces, cards, and dice in plastic bags, clip the bags to the file folder, and you’re ready to go!
