This packet is meant to start a reading race in the classroom. A week before I introduced the chart to the class I started getting them excited about “The Great Reading Race” by getting them all excited and competitive about it. I found different free reading responses from all over the internet and picked 2 or 3 of my favorites and then completed them with the ELMO with the kids so they could see that it was not hard. We had a countdown until the start date, but I let them “cheat” by starting to read ahead of time! To get the kids even more excited about the race I brought in the “Mystery Prize” which is a rather large box wrapped up with a big bow. The kids have no idea what is in there, but the first student to finish 25 books gets the prize. In my box is a beanbag chair I found on clearance at Target for $5.00, so the winner would have a neat place to read at home, but before I found that I was planning on getting some gently used books. The kids were fairly excited before the prize came out so it may not be necessary.
Included in this packet are:
• Guidelines page, which I printed and laminated and put on the bulletin board next to the chart.
• The Great Reading Race Chart, I used the poster printer to blow this up and hang it on my reading bulletin board.
• A binder insert for the binder that holds all of the book response forms.
I have included a word version as well so you can type your student’s names in the chart or edit the rules. If you want to use the poster printer at your school, make sure you save the file as a pdf first! I hope your kids love their reading race!
