This is a three part unit covering important Supreme Court cases that deal with issues concerning free speech. Included in the download are write ups for Gitlow v. New York, Schenck v. the U.S., Brandenburg v. Ohio, and the U.S. v. O'Brien. The write ups give important background information on the cases as well as explanations for the Court's decisions. The issues in the cases include a variety of 1st Amendment issues such as the Bad Tendency Doctrine, clear and present danger, symbolic speech, the famous "Yelling FIRE in a crowded theater" reference, and the Espionage Act of 1917. Each unit also has student activities to accompany the readings. The unit includes three guided reading activities, three sets of true and false questions, three sets of vocabulary activities, three student response essay questions, three sets of multiple choice reading comprehension questions, and a word builder activity to wrap up the unit. There are enough activities to fill around three 30 to 40 minute segments of a history or government class.
