This is a three part unit covering important Supreme Court cases that deal with issues concerning prayer in public schools. Included in the download are write ups for Everson v. Board of Education, Engel v. Vitale, Wallace v. Jaffree, and Lee v. Weisman. The lessons give important background information on the cases as well as explanations for the Court's decisions. The issues in the cases include a variety of 1st Amendment issues involving the separation of church and state, including student-led prayer at sporting events, religious figures speaking at graduations, state-sponsored prayer, moments of silence for prayer or meditation, voluntary prayer, and taxpayer aid to parents (for busing) whose children attend parochial schools. Each unit also has student activities to accompany the readings. The unit includes three guided reading activities, three sets of true and false questions, three sets of vocabulary activities, three student response essay questions, three sets of multiple choice reading comprehension questions, and a word builder activity to wrap up the unit. There are enough activities to fill around three 30 to 40 minute segments of a history or government class.
