This product, created by Jean Martin, is a 25 page packet consisting of a ready-to-use 19-page student booklet, an answer key for the comprehension questions, plus a master for vocabulary bookmarks. It is intended for use with students in grades 4-7 who are reading The Great Turkey Walk, by Kathleen Karr.
The student booklet divides the text into seven reading assignments with questions and tasks to go with each one. It reinforces many skills that good readers and writers need to maintain: general comprehension, vocabulary, visualization, explaining, describing, summarizing, map reading, connecting to the text, comparing & contrasting, and recognizing point-of-view.
The Great Turkey Walk in a nutshell:
This historical fiction story takes place in the mid 1800s. The main character, Simon, has just completed 3rd grade for the fourth time and his teacher suggests that it is time for him to begin life in the real world. While he is not bright academically, he comes up with a scheme to make him rich. He will herd turkeys from Missouri to Denver where they will fetch a high price. The rest of the book tells about his adventures in carrying out his plan. Simon's adventures take the reader through scary, sad, exciting, and hilarious times. Students reading this book get a great sense of life in the West at this time in history.
The book has won several awards including Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year, School Library Journal Best Book of the Year, NCTE Notable Children's Book in Language Arts, and NCSS-CBC Notable Children's Book in Social Studies.
Appropriate for students in grades 4-7. Reading level approximately 5th grade.
