**Vocabulary words appropriate to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders for the first quarter of the school year**
The following creative activity is effective for teaching vocabulary words per quarter for middle school students. I’ve long since abandoned the idea of assigning weekly lists of words and quizzing them the next week: kids cram them and then forget about them. This project, completed over a typical nine-week period, allows students to learn new words, USE them, find them in sources, present them as individual projects, view them throughout the quarter as they hang around the room, and then ultimately be quizzed on them at the end of the quarterly grading period.
This project involves students being assigned to teach one word each quarter using visual word charts and current events to provide meaning. Every student completes a ten-step process to analyze their assigned word including a short class presentation using current events articles, which ultimately culminates in a final quarterly quiz of all words presented for the quarter. Each student word chart can also be hung around the room as a display review until the final quiz.
This file includes a lesson overview, timeline, and sample, a student assignment sheet, a list of first quarter vocabulary words appropriate to 6th through 8th grades (master word list sheet and word strips to cut up for students to select), a presentation schedule calendar, three total quizzes and answer keys covering definitions, sentence completions, and synonyms/antonyms, and a teacher scoring sheet.
Additional quarters forthcoming.
