This lesson plan is based on the book The Gruffalo, by J. Donaldson. In this story a mouse goes for a walk in the woods and along the way meets several predators including a fox, an owl, and a snake. The Gruffalo is a very popular book with younger children and will inspire much literacy-based play in your early primary classroom.
This rich read-aloud lesson introduces children to extensive vocabulary, story comprehension, and text connections. A number of play-based learning centres are described so that children can continue to explore, retell, and innovate the text long after the lesson has ended. Suggestions for assessment are also provided.
