This is a Power Point Presentation of several key vocabulary terms in the Tall tale, The Gullywasher written by Joyce Rossi.
Terms are first presented on a page with two illustrations that give students clues about what the term may mean. The teacher allows the students to think about and discuss the meaning of the term. Then, the teacher clicks to the next page which shows a copy of the first page with a brief definition of the term.
To keep student interest, I plant a sound bite on only one page. I challenge the students to pay attention and see who can be the first to come up to the board to engage the sound. They must pay attention to find the icon for a sound on the page. On this PPT the sound bite is of a bird singing on the pajarita vocabulary page.
At the end of the PPT, is a context clues quiz. Students really enjoy being able to complete the sentences. Finally on the last page is a fireworks show with sound to celebrate their new vocabulary knowledge.
I have found that this is a great way to peak student interest in a new text. They learn the words and then wonder how they will be used in the text.
The Gullywasher words include; gullywasher, abuelito, vaquero, mesa, siesta, and pajarita.
