Active learning vocabulary task based on the novel by Margaret Atwood. The puzzle contains 32 words. All are important, unusual, or key words from the text with which students should be familiar for discussion and analysis of it.
Words are .. Angels, Aunts, Ceremony, Colonies, Commanders, Compuchek, Daughters, Dystopia, Econowives, Eyes, Frailroad, Gilead, Guardians, Handmaids, Jezebels, Keepers, Marthas, Mayday, Particicution, Pornomarts, Prayvaganzas, Quakers, Resistance, Salvagings, Scrabble, Testifying, Theocracy, Totalitarian, Unbaby, Unwomen, Wall, and Wives.
Although students often see the puzzle format as a fun task, this is deceptive. It is an active learning activity that gets them thinking about words (and their meaning in the novel).
This is the type of activity that you could use with early finishers, or give to a sub teacher, or use as a filler on a day when you have nothing else prepared. You could use it to check on students' understanding of key words on completion of the novel.
A word bank is supplied to support students. You could redact this to make the puzzle more challenging. In this case, try using as an open book test.
The solution is included. Download the preview file to see the grid and the solution.
