PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Handmaid’s Tale is a powerful story, even if it had been totally invented—but when students learn of the historical background and political forces that influenced Margaret Atwood’s novel, richly illustrated in this Power Point presentation, they get an even deeper glimpse into the creative minds of writers like Atwood (and Orwell and Miller and others) who draw from source materials and their own fiery imaginations to create works that seem even more relevant today than when they were first published. This is especially true of Atwood’s novel, first published in 1986. The rise of the Religious Right, the backlash to Feminism, and the question of Constitutional rights vs. public safety are but a few of the issues from the 1980s that are considered in this presentation. This Power Point will evoke student reactions to current trends in American culture and politics—just as Atwood intended.
