Before you begin the lesson to read this, there are several quotes to cut out and give to each student. Students will get different quotes, but all the question for each quote are the same. Discuss the importance and meaning of these quote with your students and relate them to events in history and/or current events.
Students will begin by answering three pre-reading questions. Students should have a basic understanding and introduction of the holocaust before reading this. As students complete their first read they will fill in the graphic organizer for each of the four sections of the poem. The can fill this in with words, quotes, summaries or sketches.
For their second read, they will complete the "while your reading" questions on comprehension and inferencing/symbolism questions.
After they are finished, they will complete the three "post read" questions. The final step for extended thinking is to complete the one-pager assignment. The rubric is available for you to write in your own point value depending on how much you want to make the assignment worth.
