“Helen’s Hat Shop” is a fun, engaging, and challenging activity in which students gain practice understanding part to whole fractions where the “whole” is not “one” item, but the whole “group” of items. This is challenging for students who have trouble extending and applying their knowledge to new problem solving situations-the activities in this packet help students make connections to familiar real life scenarios. This product provides hands-on experience with this type of fraction problem solving, as the students are given a box full of hats and color a given fractional portion according to directions. There are four pages, each with four boxes of black ink hats, and the directions state (for example) 1/4 of the hats are red.”
Many of the problems require the students to reduce fractions and/or find equivalent fractions. The first page gives an instructional example, but, depending on the grade and ability of your students, you may choose to do the problems during whole group instruction as opposed to giving them as independent work.
The packet also includes an activity in which the students create their own box of hats by coloring and cutting out hats provided, then gluing them into empty boxes.(They may need to overlap their hats depending on the number of hats they would like to fit) When the hat box is full, the students complete a sentence stating what fractions and what colors their hat box represents. The product includes one student page with three empty boxes and one sheet with 90 hats to color, which may be duplicated as many times as necessary depending on your own lesson planning. Please take a look at the preview to see examples.
