This book is one of the most important books of my last 18 years teaching. Angie Thomas explores the conflict that arises all too often between young men of color and the authorities. Starr is the only witness to a shooting involving the death of one of her best friends at the hands of the police. In this unit, students will be asked to explore the most controversial topics that they face today. Some of the chapters will require a 300 words minimum essay that will ask the students to explore every side of the issue. The essay prompts, questions and quotes will give rise to great discussion and thoughtful responses. There is a slide for each of the different chapters in the book. Some chapters are put together in order for the unit to flow better.
