Great book for the 2017 school year!
Includes questions, vocabulary/slang and culturally significant people, places, things, technology etc that is applicable to students in 2017 and helps to paint a picture of the type of life this girl leads.
This novel would be great for a class dealing with 'tougher' students. It's topical in it covers the 'Black Lives Matter' issues happening across the United States currently and is a very engaging book. Lots of reference to cultural icons and contemporary products, people and things to draw in the adolescent reader.
There is a movie being produced under the same name and would be a great accompaniment to the book.
It follows a 16 year-old black girl living who witnesses her best friend killed by a cop. She lives in a poor part of the city, but goes to a private- mostly white school. She is caught between these worlds and has to deal with the ongoing problem of her families safety versus speaking out about the murder of her friend.
Overall a fantastic story and great novel teens would absolutely love!
