This is an interactive and culturally responsive novel study for Angie Thomas's The Hate U Give. The unit explores modern issues of police brutality, racism, and the justice system through high level analysis questions, writing prompts, and extension activities/articles.
The first items included are chapter-by-chapter questions (1 set per every 1-2 chapters). These are meant to go beyond simply checking for comprehension, asking for opinions, analysis, and higher level responses. These serve as great starting points for class discussion.
Next, there are ten writing prompts where students reflect on their own experiences and how they relate to the novel. The prompts help students to understand the emotions and actions of characters on a deeper level.
Also included are extension activities and articles, along with graphic organizers, which help to connect the novel to modern society and culture. Some examples:
Finally there are quick chapter-by-chapter pop quizzes. These are meant to check that students have read and understood each part.
