Product Description

I've gone through the numerous talks available on Ted.com to find just the right ones to pair with "The Hate U Give." This product includes guide questions for the talks along with one final question to connect the talk with the text. There are also writing prompts for each talk. Some prompts relate back to the text while some help students connect the talk to current topics and their own experiences.

Each set of questions is available as a PDF or as a shareable Google Slide for students to use in Google Drive. Whichever works best for you and your students! Answers are included.

Talk 1: How to raise a black son in America by Clint Smith

This talk is perfect to pair with the text because it all about the talk parents and guardians have with their black sons about what to do/avoid doing in order to stay safe. The advice covered here is similar to the advice Starr remembers her own parents telling her.

*This talk is by a poet and is poetic in style and content.

Talk 2: 3 ways to speak English by Jamila Lyiscott

This talk describes how Lyiscott uses different variations of English depending on who is with and where she is. Similar to how Starr feels as though there is a Williamson Starr and a normal Starr.

*This talk is by a poet and is poetic in style and content.

Talk 3: How to overcome our biases? Walk boldly toward them by Verna Myers

This final talk, just like the text, leaves the audience on the positive note that things can change for the better. Specifically, Myers explains how we all can own our biases and work to change them. This is a longer talk (18 minutes) that easily lends itself to class discussions and multiple connections to the text.
