This pre-reading strategy uses critical thinking and inquiry learning to engage your students for their upcoming reading of the young adult fiction novel, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Designed to meet requirements of the Common Core and help prepare students for standardized assessments such as PARCC, this activity requires students to complete close reading and use explicit text evidence to make logical inferences and predictions. Additionally, students must walk around the classroom to gather their evidence, so it is an excellent activity for your kinesthetic learners.
The eleven-page resource includes an explanation of the strategy in simple terms with answers to the following questions:
What is it?
How does it work?
How is it related to the Common Core?
It also includes the following:
-30 printable lines of text (listed in order but the page numbers are not included so that the lines can be used with multiple versions of the book)
-a page with example predictions that can be used for think-alouds and teacher modeling
-a post-reading reflective activity
This activity could also be used to “tease” reluctant readers who are selecting independent reading novels or literature circle books.
