** I strongly suggest that you collaborate with your local aboriginal community elders for this project. A drum is not merely a percussion instrument. It is the spiritual heartbeat of a nation.

This project incorporates indigenous and experiential learning methodologies which integrates Fine Art and English into the Social Studies 9 curriculum. Emphasis on cooperative learning, linking spirituality, relationships, and the expression of traditional values.

Materials Needed

- Drum kits for each student

- Plastic Bins with water – for soaking the deer skin

- Acrylic paint

- Small paint brushes

- Permanent markers

The creation of the drums will take 5 classes. (1 to stretch and lace the drum, 1 of library research to design their artwork, 1 to pencil in the design and begin painting, and 2 to complete the painting.)
